As part of Mophradat’s 2021/22 programming under the general theme of “mother,” we are organizing a series of retreat with artists, writers, and translators invested in exploring the possibilities of “ungendered” forms of the Arabic language. The group is invited to experiment with Arabic by focusing on examples and texts to deconstruct, play with, and rewrite literally, visually, and conceptually. The program has had three chapters so far and is ongoing.
An essay by Suneela Mubayi reflecting on the subject is published in Read the Room #1.
Ungendering Language was developed as part of the project “Distinct Voices” which was partially funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, with the support of International Media Support, and realized in cooperation with Allianz Kulturstiftung.
