We partnered again with the updated CAPACETE in Rio de Janeiro, to include some artists from the Arab world in their annual program. For this pilot collaboration, the goal was to create closer ties with the artists from Latin America and to better connect with their broader artistic context. The artists who attended the residency this year were:

Bayan Kiwan is an artist based in Amman. Monumentalizing the mundane within the confines of the domestic, Bayan’s research and practice are driven by questions of place, memory, and the everyday. She is currently working with folds, wherein her paintings and ceramics linger on the minor details of intimacy, evidencing the long and pervasive afterlife of dispossession. Bayan was a participant in Mophradat’s New Agents program in 2023/4.

Marwa Benhalim is a Cairo-based Egyptian/Libyan artist and curator. Her practice explores the micro and macro manifestations and entanglements of power to develop new ways of addressing and engaging with significant societal issues. She is the co-founder and co-director of the annual Cairo Art Book Fair, an art book fair that celebrates the diversity of publishing practices and connects communities interested in art publishing in Egypt and other geographies.

With almost three decades of existence, CAPACETE is the oldest residency which provides public programs and cultural exchanges in Brazil. Its structure is based on support for artistic research (xow.rumi), summer residency (Fervo), open courses, experimental kitchen, libraries, collections, and publications.
