Mophradat is collaborating with Rio de Janeiro’s Capacete on a residency opportunity for artists from the Arab world. Capacete is a residency program that has been active for twenty years, aiming to set up situations and develop strategies that offer concrete and real alternatives to the unstable field of art. Previous programs have been designed to reflect the interdisciplinary character of contemporary aesthetic practices and to promote efforts that join the theoretical world with artistic presentations of diverse formats and dynamics, for a range of audiences.
Capacete’s 2020 program will focus on seminars and discussions around the experience and production of different cosmologies, aligned with each resident’s research. Capacete will program activities that indicate a collective creation of a space/platform, composed of exercises, dialogues, and practices that reference horizontal experiences, and thereby invent modes of learning and exchange. Capacete will privilege collectivity as both a mode of research, and a mode of care and knowledge. The activities will bring the participants closer to the social, cultural, and political dynamics of Rio de Janeiro, as well as to several of its agents.

Mophradat is providing a unique opportunity to conduct research in the archive of Meeting Points (spanning between 2004 to 2017). The opportunity is for a researcher interested in contemporary arts from the Arab world and curatorial models of exchange and presentation.
Between 2004 and 2017, Mophradat (and previously the Young Arab Theatre Fund) commissioned, produced and presented a touring arts multidisciplinary festival for the Arab world titled Meeting Points, which had eight editions. During its life span, the festival changed form, grew and contracted in response to changing circumstances, and was guest curated by Frie Leysen, Okwui Enwezor, WHW, amongst others. Much of this rich history is in need of assembling and reflection, and for this research Mophradat is looking for a graduate student, academic, emerging curator, art historian, or so interested in developing the archive of material, organizing the information, and analyzing it as part of Mophradat’s institutional history and as part of their own research interests.
ABOUT THE POSITION
The selected researcher will be given access to Mophradat’s archival materials, as well as the necessary help and contacts to pursue the line of inquiry they are interested in. They are expected to devise a classification system, initiate contacts to locate missing documents, conduct the necessary interviews (when possible), and flag the most important content of the archive.

Initiated in 2018, Orbitals is an annual program taking three to four curators, selected through an open call, to an international location for a ten-day guided research trip to meet and share their experiences with peers in the art scenes they are visiting.
For the second edition of Orbitals, three or four curators will be selected to travel together to New Delhi for a week to get to know the art scene, visiting artists and curators, as well as local art institutions and initiatives. The group will then travel by train for a two-day seminar in Chandigarh, bringing them to the city’s main architectural sites to explore this renowned modernist urban model, and how it relates to and influences contemporary cultural production. This two-day trip will be guided by architecture scholar Mohamed Elshahed.
Organized in collaboration with the Foundation for Indian Contemporary Art (FICA), the program will also be partially tailored to the specific interests of the selected participants. Mophradat will plan the entire trip while covering airfare, insurance, and visa costs, as well as providing participants with accommodations and per diem.
