FAQ
When can I apply for the Grants for Artists?
There are two deadlines per year at midnight on April 1 and October 1. You can send your application any time but only by using our online application form.
Is nationality a criterion?
No, all projects relevant to the Arab world are eligible.
Can I apply again if I was not selected?
Yes, but we encourage you to apply with a different project.
Can I still apply for other Mophradat programs even if I already received a grant?
Yes, but not if they overlap. For example, if you received a Grant for Artists for a publication, you can’t apply for a Writing Sabbatical Grant to finish the same book.
Can I apply with two different projects in the same session?
Yes, but we receive a high number of applications and the selection process is extremely competitive therefore it is doubtful that both your projects would be selected.
Can I apply for a project that has already started?
No, we do not refund expenses already made.
How many applicants are selected for each session?
Around 10 applicants, but we hope to support more in the future.
What is the grant amount?
We try to provide the amount requested, however, that rarely exceeds $5,000.
What is the length of time given for a project to be completed?
We ask for your project to be completed one year from signing the grant agreement.
Are applications written in English instead of Arabic more likely to be selected?
No, the selection is based solely on the merits of the project being proposed.

Are writing projects eligible?
Yes. However, we are not a publisher and are not involved in the editing, printing or distribution of books produced with our grants.
Is touring, traveling to events or for research, or attending residencies eligible?
Yes.
Are the expenses of bachelor, masters or Ph.D. programs eligible for any of Mophradat’s grants?
No, we do not offer grants for degree-based programs. However, it is possible to apply for support for short-term or intensive educational activities such as participating in a workshop.
Can I know the reason why my application was not selected?
Due to the high volume of applications and the confidentiality of the selection process, we don’t provide individual feedback explaining the reason an application was not selected.
What can the Grant for Artists cover?
There are no restrictions to what the grant can cover from material and equipment to field research expenses, fees, renting a workspace, printing etc.
How is my project evaluated?
We rely on the experience and knowledge of the members of the different selection committees invited each round to determine the projects that receive support. Some of the criteria they use in their evaluation include the candidates’ knowledge of their discipline, or their understanding of the relationship between form and content, and/or that projects are artistically singular or have special relevance for the art community.
